Scope

A Phase II, underwater archaeological investigation of a shipwreck located in New Bedford Harbor, Massachusetts. Project work included two principal components: additional underwater archeological investigation to collect more information on the shipwreck site, and documentary research to assist in confirming the identity the wreck. The wreck was identified as the Thomas H. Lawrence, a three-masted schooner constructed in Boston in 1891, and abandoned in New Bedford Harbor in 1940. Data collected from the underwater investigation and through historical research was used to evaluate the significance of the wreck in terms of the National Register of Historic Places eligibility criteria (36 CFR 60.4).
